Happy New Moon in Aries! Right before a new moon is the perfect time for deep purification and banishing negative energy, and then once the moon is new and starts to wax towards the full moon again, it is ideal for new beginnings and blessings for the next 2 weeks.
So hopefully you found some time to declutter and clear out some personal space before you started binge watching Game of Thrones to get ready for the launch of the new season last Sunday evening. IMHO there is a fine line between taking time for ourselves and procrastination. Sometimes I believe the best thing you can do in life is just say F-It and focus on something you simply want to do for fun. I think it fundamentally all comes down to the balance between your comfort and discomfort. When something is persistently nagging at you every time you think about doing it, there comes a point when you just got to put on your galoshes and wade into the project and git-er-done. If procrastination is keeping you from getting off your butt and doing it, I suggest a few rounds of tapping to voice your resistance and define the positive outcome you want to achieve as this will most likely give you the jumpstart you need.
OKAY so enough about procrastination! Let’s imagine that you have taken inventory of your space and you have removed the objects which are no longer serving you. You can probably already feel a difference in your space. However often there can be some lingering congested energy from accumulated emotions and thoughts along with the occasional spirit or ghost (please note: dealing with the unquiet dead is really a different subject than this which is worthy of its own series of posts).
Spiritual Cleaning of a Space has 4 components.
- Declutter & Eliminate objects that you have negative associations with.
- Tidy and physically clean your space.
- Break up and clear congested energy in your space
- Bless and recharge your space with positive intention & energy
The rest of this post is about #3 (I will be writing about #4 in the next installment about blessing your space)
There are a number of approaches for decongesting a space that is thick with unpleasant energy. You can use Sound. You can use Scent & Smoke. You can use Movement & Air Flow. You can use water. And you can reinforce the process with intention and visualization. In general it is considered most effective to move counterclockwise as this is considered the direction of unwinding whereas clockwise is associated with winding up and building up energy.
With sound it can be as simple as moving through your space and clapping firmly with intent to break up energy. Focus especially on corners and other tight areas where energy tends to accumulate. Toning with your voice can amplify your intent or actually speak aloud to the space about what you are ousting and tell it to leave. When I really need some extra oomph I like to chant a traditional Welsh banishing incantation which works especially well steadily repeated as you move counter clockwise.
To bane, to bane,
Thrice take ye back from whence ye came!
(this can be found in The Word: Welsh Witchcraft, the Grail of Immortality and the Sacred Keys By Camelot Press)
You can also use a rattle which is especially good for shaking loose stickier energy. It could be a special rattle or in a pinch you can grab a plastic aspirin bottle and use that. I am personally quite partial to using bells as they cut through the air and all the energy in a room and restructure it with the strong vibration bells create. Gongs work in a similar way to bells by shifting the vibration through the entire space but I prefer bells because you can easily ring them through-out your space and get into the tighter areas where energy might feel especially thick or icky. Singing bowls can be used too, however I find the logistics of singing bowls to make it a bit harder to navigate while holding, so I tend to use singing bowls for a final polish after the space has been cleared to soothe and sweeten the vibration in the room.
Scent generally involves the burning of herbs, resins or fragrant wood. Think of it as a spiritual disinfectant and repellent. Sagebrush and Paulo Santo Wood are two of the most popular ones but anything (natural and nontoxic) you are drawn to use to create some smoke that you can wave around your whole space is fine. Generally cleansing scents are more savory or sharp whereas sweet fragrant scents are more often used for blessings, offerings & meditation.
I do have one caution: DO NOT try to burn any kind of pepper. Let’s just say I learned this the hard way in my early 20’s when I was experimenting with burning incense on charcoals and I raided my spice cabinet. When I tried burning some cayenne I managed to fumigate my kitchen so intensely that my three cats all ran for the door and I heaved my watering eyes and gasping lungs out on to the fire escape to catch my breath.
Movement can involve any number of objects like: feathers, fans, wings, a broom or even your hands. Fanning the air with feathers, a fan or a cured bird wing (or even a fake wing) and directing the energy counterclockwise is one approach. Using a broom and sweeping with the intent that you are collecting energy and moving it out can be quite effective. If you don’t have any tools at your disposal (though hopefully you have some kind of broom) you can simply use your bare hands you can comb or rake the air and move through any congestion. If you have ever used breath and intention for holding yoga posture and imagined that you are either sending or receiving energy through your hands clearing energy in a room has a similar approach. In my experience most kids under 10 immediately grasp this concept, so if you have littles in your world you can enlist their help to clear your space even more effectively. If this seems like an odd way to clear space, if you are game, you might pretend it makes sense or if it really feels to weird to you use one of the other methods that feels more comfortable for you.
One basic way to use water for cleansing is to create a wash which involves taking a bucket of water and adding a pinch or two of sea salt for purification, a blend of essential oils or an herbal infusion to instill particular qualities and optional natural soap. Customarily this is used with a mop or a good handful of rags and you basically mop around your space with the floorwash holding the intention that this shall act as a spiritual/energetic disinfectant and cootie repellant.
Here’s a simple floorwash recipe.
- in a 2 or 3 gallon bucket of clean warm water add
- 1tsp celtic sea salt
- 5 drops rosemary oil (protection & warding)
- 10 drops clove bud oil (purify & disinfect)
- 15 drops lavender oil (calming & cleansing)
- 20 drops lemon oil (decongest and lighten the energy)
- 2 T unscented Castile soap (optional)
Floor wash infusion
in a HUGE stock pot bring a few gallons of water to a boil. Turn off and add a handful of sage leaves, a big bunch of fresh thyme and a big bunch of rosemary or 2T each of the dried herbs. Lemon grass or lemon verbena, lavender, mint and/or wormwood herb are additional possibilities. Let the infusion steep and and cool . down and then when the water is lukewarm strain off the herbs and add the infusion to your wash bucket.
A less labor intensive use of water is to Asperge the room with water. This involves a bowl of fresh water, a pinch of sea salt and optional essential oils. It is customary to use a branch of evergreen or a bunch of herb sprigs like rosemary or thyme and to dip the greens into the water and then cast the water around the space to be purifed. In my opinion though this method definitely helps to cleanse a space, it is not the most effective for breaking up a lot of negative energy alone it is better used in conjunction with another method as well. However asperging is quite good for blessing a space after it has already been cleared.
Perhaps even more crucial than the method you decide to use to spiritually cleanse your space, is your mindset, your intention and how you visualize what you are doing as you move through the space. If visualization is a new concept for you then use your imagination to first “see” the negative/icky energy and where it is stuck in your space, and then imagine it breaking up, and moving away. As I mentioned it is best to move counter clockwise through your space. As you gather the energy visualize that you are move it around the room as if it was debris you were sweeping away with a broom if there is a door to the outdoors then it is best to actually sweep or fan it right out the door and away from your entry way, if sending it outside through a door is not possible then open a window and send it out that way. Hopefully this post makes sense to you and is easy to follow. Fundamentally there is no wrong way to do this. Your intention is the most important part of all. You can use one method or you can use multiple approaches. In my experience it is especially effective to use a few techniques so you involve multiple senses as a process that targets different levels of awareness is more deeply integrated and anchored. Follow your gut, follow your imagination and most of all HAVE FUN! Stay tuned for my next installment where I will cover blessing your now clear space.
